New Year Honours for Founder
Clophill Heritage Trust, the local voluntary community charity who run the Clophill Eco Lodges and St Mary’s Old Church in Clophill, Bedfordshire are delighted to announce that their founder, Ali Bradbury, has been selected to receive an award in her Majesty’s New Year’s honours list.
The Trust is delighted that its work has been recognised in this way.
The Clophill Eco Lodges have been open since October 2015 when they were launched with a Pumpkin Festival at the site which has now become an annual affair for all the family. The unique Eco Lodges accommodation provides the charity with the revenue to enable them to support the lodges and the Old Church, and employ 2 wardens as well as provide support for many young people wanting vocational work experience and education about heritage and the countryside.
Ali has raised £1.5 million over the past 10 years to allow the charity to consolidate the scheduled ancient monument and create a new use for it with it’s beautiful viewing tower and enchanting space and views. The Trust has installed both basic and leading edge eco technology at the Eco Lodges and created a unique accommodation and venue provision in a wonderful woodland setting. Many local families make use of this facility to host their wider friends and family, as well as those from further afield wanting a walking or outdoor family holiday in Greensand Country.
Ali’s contribution to the community over the last 10 years expanded to the wider region with her input as a board member on the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership. This group are developing the Greensand Country area as a well-known landscape destination to preserve its distinctive character, required country and heritage skills, and beauty in the region. The area runs from Leighton Buzzard to Gamlingay with Clophill sitting in the central area of the Greensand Country.
Ali will be presented with her British Empire Medal later this year and the Trust and the community are very pleased with this recognition of her work over the last ten years.
Will Fletcher, Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Historic England in the East of England said: “Ali Bradbury’s work with the Clophill Heritage Trust has been instrumental in saving one of Bedforshire’s finest scheduled monuments and this award is richly deserved! Grade II* listed Old Clophill Church was removed from our Heritage at Risk Register in 2014 after a major repair project led by the Trust and we continue to offer our support to it over the coming years.”
